Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12, ESV
In all relationships, God desires to be placed in the center. We are reminded of this by these words of the Preacher. He calls us to see the weakness we have when we try to do it by ourselves. We live in a DIY culture, and this is truly nothing new for humanity. We often take pride in our self-sufficiency. Codependency is also dangerous. God desires neither of us, but rather seeks that we be God-dependent. As we struggle, we can find comfort in the knowledge that God is with us. Our relationships may be strengthened as we seek God’s wisdom in our interactions, and when in danger, cry out to Him for help. In our marriages, when God is in the center, bonds will be strengthened when husband and wife keep the thread of God ever in the middle as He knits two into one. As we live our lives God-centered and Christ-focused, we find that He is always near and awaits us with a warm embrace, gathering us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
