Proverbs 24:1–2

Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, for their hearts devise violence, and their lips talk of trouble.

Proverbs 24:1–2, ESV

Jesus said, “What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world, but loses his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37, Matthew 16:26, Luke 9:25). The allure of wealth and fame destroys the best of people. The adage “Money can’t buy happiness” carries a deep truth. The issue isn’t the money, though; it is our human heart. Our hearts are easily tempted when our lives are not centered in Christ. The problem is that it may divide our loyalties, as the focus shifts to protecting money and making more rather than perpetuating the Gospel. We can become envious of what others have instead of desiring to bring others closer to Christ. We can become more fearful of losing our possessions than of losing sight of God, forgetting His promises, and blaspheming the Holy Spirit. We can become complacent, and the good things we do become our comfort, rather than living out the Gospel and being a light to others in Christ, as we seek only to feed the body and forget to feed the soul. Let our hearts remain focused on Christ and His promises and find our peace in His providence as we seek to reflect more of Him and less of ourselves.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
