For better is a day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would choose to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Psalm 84:10, LSB
Most of us probably know people who dream of visiting a special place, a life goal of setting foot in a location that is significant in culture. There is nothing wrong with this as long as there is perspective given and this shrine does not overshadow faith in the one, true God. The psalmist writes these words with this perspective: “No matter how awesome any place in this world may be, nothing surpasses being able to stand near the presence of God.” If we were only to spend a day before God in all eternity, it would be better than anywhere else, and if we were to spend eternity at the furthermost entrance to the house of God, it would be better than living a lifetime with the greatest celebrities that did not know God. For the faithful followers of Christ, our Lord calls us to place Him at the highest place of honor in our lives. What does this mean? If we were told to leave behind anything to follow God, we would do so without hesitation. The rewards of God will always outshine the greatest rewards we could ever find on earth. This is the difficulty for many because we make God less tangible in our lives and don’t necessarily consider the greater rewards that await us. We are constantly tempted to go after short-term pleasure and forget eternity in our Lord’s presence. God calls us away from the culture wars and into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
