Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is an isolated area.) So he got up and went. And there was a man, an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship.
Acts 8:26–27, EHV
After Philip had a powerful moment of evangelism and witnessed many people being filled with the Holy Spirit and coming to faith, God sent him on a journey down a desolate road. It most certainly had to have been a little disconcerting for Philip as he walked this road, but being faithful to God’s call, he went. It was here he met the Ethiopian eunuch and opened the Word to Him, and the power was revealed in a very personal way. We often seek the exceptional and the extraordinary, but God often works in the simple moments. He will enter into the ordinary conversations and moments, and the door of faith is opened in the hearts of those who hear. It may be a simple discussion on Scripture, in a time of prayer, or in the singing of a song. We don’t know how God can use us, nor are we aware of when our words will matter, but when God knocks, our calling is to answer. The power of the Word of God is ever present, but it is in how he uses us that changes occur, and it is in these moments we may find His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
