“And I know, O my God, that You try the heart and delight in uprightness. I, in the uprightness of my heart, have willingly offered all these things. So now with gladness I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You.”

1 Chronicles 29:17, LSB

As a faithful father, David’s prayer near the end of his life, reflecting on the things he has done, comes to this as he prepares to pray for God’s protection and guidance for his son, Solomon. David is not unaware of his shortcomings, but he has been a faithful follower of God his entire life. God desires our faithfulness. We can’t fake it until we make it with God. He knows us inside and out. A submissive heart is a faithful heart. That means we may not necessarily make all the right choices, but the condition of our heart is of primary concern. We can’t explain away our sins, but we turn to our Lord and receive forgiveness from Him. We ask for God’s hand to guide and care for us, and, like David, we pray that His hand will be with our children, guiding them to do better and live lives fuller than our own. God knows what is in the heart of us all, and there is nothing we can hide from Him. We are all beggars, and our Lord leads us into His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
