Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed of the Lord who has not withdrawn His kindness to the living and to the dead.” Naomi said to her, “This man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeeming relatives.”
Ruth 2:20, MEV
The story of Naomi and her Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth, would not normally have been remembered, nor would Boaz or his actions as the kinsman redeemer. The actions of Boaz were honorable, and Ruth was a loyal daughter-in-law at great risk to herself. Naomi was a faithful wife, widowed by a husband who had brought her out of the familial lands in pursuit of something better and had allowed his sons to marry a people that God had told him not to allow to be bound to. It would not be memorable were it not for God’s use of what would normally be seen as an event better to be ignored. It is out of a faithful and loyal daughter-in-law caring for her hopeless mother-in-law, and the kindness of a man who had compassion on them both. Out of this union, our Lord would give the redemption of all creation. As Boaz, the kinsman redeemer, would become the grandfather of King David, out of whose line would come the Redeemer of all Creation in our Lord and Savior. Out of one redeemer would grow THE Redeemer who would lead us all into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
