What then shall we say? That the Law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
Romans 7:7, ESV
Without God’s Law, we become a law unto ourselves. For example, we don’t know anything wrong with being covetous. Isn’t this what we see within the world? Of course, the obvious things like stealing or killing are seen as out of order by nature, but even those can be massaged by a worldly sense to allow for some acceptable forms of theft, and sometimes the taking of a life is acceptable and may even be promoted. If it is defined by humanity rather than by God, there are no hard-and-fast truths. Nothing is clear and clean cut. Grey areas become more predominant as some things that are clearly black-and-white with God become muddled by worldly exceptions. Right and wrong can become mixed up, and without God’s clear expectations. Sin becomes a concept that is only meant to oppress and for believers to gain power over others. In a world without an understanding of God’s Law, the removal of sin leads us down a path away from our Lord and away from God’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
