1 Peter 3:3–4

Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on garments; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible quality of a lowly and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

1 Peter 3:3–4, LSB

The words of Peter and the writings of Paul about outward adornment speak to the issue of the externals which our world will often place a greater focus on. God does not define us by our appearance, but by what is in our hearts. You can take the frame and body of a Corvette, and have it look all beautiful, but if you place within it the motor and transmission of a Yugo it won’t make it a great car. A similar principle is true for us. If all we are is beautiful on the outside, but our inside is empty and self-centered there is little left to be desired after a while and our value to God is not very high because our hearts are not with Him. Whether a person of Christ wears outer adornment is not the issue, but the heart is. A person unadorned and wearing only black without any jewelry or makeup is not made holy because they forsake those things and can be far away from God. We are called to live our lives reflecting Christ and not be as concerned by our appearance but seek to glorify our Lord inside and out. It is in living our lives for Him we may find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
