Exodus 20:7

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

Exodus 20:7, NKJV

No one likes their name being misused; why should we not believe the same about God? I don’t know that He likes the avoidance of His name either. I know I wouldn’t. Our name is a part of us and defines how we are called and spoken of by others. God desires us to utilize His name reverently to show others what He means to us and who He is. To mock or abuse His name is to dishonor and belittle. When we pray, we can pray knowing He hears us, and when we speak of Him, we use His name as a witness to our dependence and love for Him. When we speak of Him, our words are not meant to speak of someone far off and intangible but near and intimate. God is always close to His chosen, and His ear is always attuned to listen to those whom He loves. Let the words that come from our mouths reflect the love our Father has for us and shine His light out to a world that needs to know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
