Joseph gets little mention in the Bible, but the carpenter had a vital role: he would take Jesus as his son and protect him from those who sought to harm him, as is clear from the prophecy spoken to him by God. His role was vital without trying to make him into something more than a carpenter. God knew the importance of His Son having an earthly father, and God provided that for Him. God also knows the importance of a name as He names His Son, Jesus, which would point people back to Joshua and remind them how he led God’s people, Israel, into the promised land. Jesus is the one who leads us out of the wilderness of our sin into God’s promised hope of a new creation. As we walk with our Lord and know the sacrifice He made for us on the Cross, we understand the gift of salvation that has been poured out for us. Our Lord’s life was preordained to be a light for us all to lead us out of the darkness of sin into His glorious peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
