He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup after the supper, saying, “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is being poured out for you.”
Luke 22:19–20, EHV
As we come to this Sacrament and receive in ourselves His body and blood, we receive as He has promised, the forgiveness of our sins. This is where our life and journey with our Lord Jesus Christ is regularly reviewed and offers a renewal for those who have wandered astray. It is not a ceremony where we receive bread and wine and must ponder on our hearts all that we have done, but a space where Christ our Lord, in body and blood, meets us and we take Him into ourselves physically and audibly. When we receive the gift and promise that He gives and are renewed in His new testament to us, we can find certainty in His claim upon our lives and turn from those things that continually try to bind us to the old. It is at the altar He kills that old Adam in us over and over again, so He may rise centrally in our lives. Each time, we come to the altar, our Lord is calling us back to Himself and into His warm embrace so we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
