“But now your kingdom shall not endure. The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
1 Samuel 13:14, NASB95
God had chosen and anointed Saul to be king over the people of Israel. He had been filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, so some said he was numbered among the prophets. What we find, however, is that Saul became overly proud, and God pulled away from him because Saul’s heart was not after God’s heart but after the world. God desires our hearts to be hearts that seek after His heart. He wants us to yearn to be in unison with Him in all ways as we lead others to know Him. We are all called in this way all our days and it is a leadership which He seeks from us as we follow the narrow path into His glory. The ways of this world are always tempting us down paths away from God and the directions that we are led may seem virtuous but guide us into places of false hope and rob us of joy. Our passions can impede us in our pursuit if not aligned with the heart of our Lord. The hope comes as we hear the call of our Good Shepherd who seeks after us and snatches us out of the thickets and pulls us from the mire that clings to us and sucks us down attempting to swallow us. Let our hearts seek God’s and our lives reflect our Lord so we may live and lead others to our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
