In fact, I will hold each animal and each person responsible for your lifeblood. I will hold each man responsible for the life of his brother. Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for God made man in His own image.
Genesis 9:5–6, EHV
God cares for His creation, but His care is particular for humans because, as men and women, we are all bearers of God’s image. Though we are imperfect, we still bear the image of God, who is perfect. Our imperfections are because of sin, but sin does not excuse us from recognizing the value within the lives of any man, woman, or child. He values the life of mankind higher than all other creatures, and we are called to protect the life of our brothers and sisters. From the womb to the tomb, we are called to protect all human life, and for those who take a human life, there is a cost. That cost varies, as we find, because of sin, but there is a price to be paid nonetheless. As followers of Christ, we are reminded to value life and seek to uphold that value and speak clearly about God’s love for His creation and us, as His creatures. Our Lord Jesus Christ paid the price for our blood sin with His own blood, and in this, He gave us hope and a promise that through His sacrifice, we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
