Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Proverbs 31:8–9, ESV

We are called to stand against oppression, and historically, those who have been oppressed are the voiceless and the poor. This isn’t a call to social justice, but a call to do what is just. All people are created in the image of God. From the womb to the tomb, we are called, as followers of Christ, to be protectors of life. For those who cannot speak and are helpless, we are to stand and offer our care and our protection. No one should be abused because of the status they hold within the community or their inability to fully care for themselves. It isn’t OK to take the life of a person or to abuse a person because it is felt that they have nothing to offer society. Everyone is of value because they are created with value. Israel was reminded to care for brothers and sisters in the community, that no follower of God would go hungry, naked, or homeless. So are we, as followers of Christ, called to care for our neighbor and be Christ to those who are suffering, so all may come to know Christ’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
