For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
Matthew 16:26, ESV
There are a lot of good endeavors in the world. Being a good husband or wife is a noble quality. Building a strong organization that provides goods or services beneficial to humanity is commendable. Yet, nothing is of any value if God is not in focus. We can become caught up in a lot of noble causes, yet not move us any closer to our Lord, and lose sight of Him. There is nothing more vital than Jesus Christ. This is easily lost in our world today because we are continually confronted with the newest innovations and think we are being better because we are in line with the next achievement or purpose. The one who has the most toys doesn’t truly win in the end. It is the one whose life pointed most to our Lord who will find the greatest victory. All the wealth or prestige, or good work doesn’t matter if your soul is lost. How much would many give if, at the end of their lives, they knew with certainty that their grandchildren were solidly with Christ? What is your soul worth? What is the soul of the generations following you worth? Seek Christ, live in Christ, and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
