Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31, LSB

Under Christ, we are no longer bound under the old dietary laws given to the Hebrew people. Nor are we bound by the sacrificial laws. Not because they were abolished, but because they were fulfilled in Christ Jesus. We are a new creation in our Lord. Foods that were once considered profane are no longer considered profane unless they could cause another brother or sister in Christ to stumble. Paul gives a great example of the food sacrificed to idols. At the time, most of the meat purchased at common marketplaces had probably been sacrificed to a false god. In Christ, we know that these gods have no power or authority, and it is just meat, but a new follower who may have just come out of that false religion may find the consumption of the meat to be problematic. For the sake of a brother or sister in Christ, we should seek to abstain from things that we know are not against God if it may cause them to fall into unbelief. The same is true with the consumption of alcohol or tobacco products. If it is done with the knowledge that it could be viewed as a stumbling block, then we are called to avoid it for the sake of the other. This is how we are to live in Christ, not for our sake, but for the glory of God. This is not just in some aspects of our lives, but in all. In this, we may find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
