“In that day you will ask nothing of Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.”

John 16:23, ESV

Jesus teaches us to call upon God the Father in His name, God the Son, and to trust that we will be heard. It is with reverence that we do this, and it shows our full dependence upon Him as our Lord and our trust in Him as our provider and protector. When the Israelites called upon God, as His chosen, He heard them, and we can see countless examples of His divine providence throughout the Old Testament. We find the same in the New, and we can trust in the same from our Lord today. When we are truly dependent upon Him, He provides. Unfortunately, we often miss this reality and call upon Him for things that are to break our dependence upon Him as there are those who pray for the material, but our Lord calls us to pray for that which we cannot obtain through our own efforts and find our reliance centered in the gifts He gives us also that allow us to provide for our wants as He supplies our needs. In the end, we will find that our wants are meaningless as we will find that all we need is ever before us.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
