Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. But His mother kept all these words in her heart.

Jesus listened to His parents. When He was found at the temple at twelve, when He was left behind, He could have argued with them, but Jesus simply listened and followed them home. He didn’t seek to be combative or argumentative. He didn’t blame Mary and Joseph for having forgotten Him. God calls us to obey authorities, remembering that they are given authority by God, and that our submission to authority honors God. It isn’t that all authority is faithful to God, but we are. We saw this in the book of Daniel, when Daniel and his friends remained faithful in their service to God in everything they did. Their faithfulness to God came first, but they submitted to earthly authority and were willing to face punishment when their faith led them to disobey edicts that ran contrary to it. We are reminded to do the same. God calls us to speak clearly about what we believe and stand as a positive witness to all authority in every action we undertake, as we are given peace through our Lord and shine His light to those who do not know Him.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
