Are you awake?

Are you awake?

He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “So, were you not able to stay awake with me for one hour?”

Matthew 26:40, EHV

I think we’ve all been there. After a long, hard day at work, we come to a point where our eyes refuse to stay open. I know I have succumbed to the siren call of the recliner while watching something with the family. For the disciples, many things had happened for the day and they came to the close of the day with Jesus asking them to keep watch while He prayed at a distance. I can imagine that they tried, but the sounds around them and the cool air lulled them into their slumber. It can be hard to stay awake physically. The same is true in our spirits. We can easily be lulled into a spiritual slumber as the patterns of our day-to-day living ebbs and flows. We can become complacent and not necessarily see the dangers slipping into our lives. The changes going around us may be subtle. Our awareness becomes dimmed. None of the disciples Jesus brought to the garden wanted to disappoint their friend and Lord. They had probably thought, “If I just close my eyes for a moment and keep my ears on alert all will be fine!” How often are we the same? Our spiritual minds may not purposely drift off into slumber, but we become comfortable, and the sounds of the world become like the chirps of the crickets and the light sounds of the leaves moving. Our Lord calls us to awaken to be prepared for what is to come, so as not to be swept away by the dangers encroaching upon us. “Wake up!” He calls. Not in fear, but in awareness to see and know as we are called to draw others into the knowledge of His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
