“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

Matthew 5:6, LSB

Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? I don’t know how often we think of these words as Jesus spoke on the Temple Mount. The blessings that Jesus speaks of are not usually what people may think of as blessings. Yet, let us ponder this for a moment. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? It is more common for people to speak of their hunger for justice, but righteousness? If we reflect on our lives, we probably will find a lot of things that are not quite right. Some we may not know how to change and others may come to light. Our Father in Heaven desires for us to give ourselves fully over to Him so He may fill us. It is only God who can remove our sins and make us right. Without His forgiveness, we would be left without hope. We would be caught “up a crick without a paddle.” Yet, we know the comfort of our Lord’s intervention as we see and understand the gift He gave us when He took upon Himself all of our sins upon the Cross. We are fed His body and drink of His blood as we come to the altar and He enters us cleansing us of all the unrighteousness that is within our lives. It is His actions that remove our stain and as we understand this more and more, we can see His gracious mercy as He washes over us and may know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
