“You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.”

Matthew 12:34, LSB

We all need our hearts to be changed by God. It is a sad reality for all humanity. This is a work we cannot do on our own, but God works this change in us. Jesus spoke this truth to the leaders of the faith, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Scribes. They thought of themselves as being very holy and upright, yet He revealed their concern was more centered on doing the things that they were taught made them holy instead of seeking after the things of God. Their hearts were not wholly with God. This was evident in their speech, particularly in how they spoke against His teachings and His challenge to their understanding of the Word of God. Jesus wants us to be continually checking our hearts. How often do things come out of our mouths in anger that troubles our spirits? If we are honest, it may happen more than we would like to admit but we like to justify our words. God doesn’t want to justify our sinful words or actions, but He forgives and seeks to change our hearts to remove unholy speech from our mouths. He seeks to salt our language with His Gospel so others may come to know His truth through us. If we find ourselves saying things contrary to God, let us pray for those things to be removed from us so we may speak of and know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
