At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.”
Matthew 11:25, LSB
As infants, we are fully dependent on others. Our parents, nurses, doctors, and other caregivers have full power over us, and we can do nothing but cry out for help and trust that others will be there to listen to our cries and care for our needs. As we grow, we often think in a way that says we are in control and have the power of self-determination. We love to believe we are in control, but it only takes a great tragedy to show how truly fragile our lives are. In times of great need, our faith is revealed as is in what we place our trust. To faithfully trust in God is not to set aside rational thinking, but to look to and understand the Word of God and the nature of our Lord and trust in His promises. We are able to see that He is in control when we see how greatly our Lord provides as we look to the Word and the miracles that Jesus Christ performs in His life. Throughout the Gospels, we see our Lord calling out to those who have no other hope and we see great miracles performed as the fragility of life is unveiled. The ruler of the synagogue, the hemorrhagic woman, the Roman commander, the paralytic man let down by his friends through the roof, and on and on. It is in our weakness when we, like infants, have only to trust in our Lord to hear our cries for need and it is in Him we see our only hope we find that He is there near at hand and He brings us His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
