If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
1 Corinthians 13:1, LSB
It may seem that the world has forgotten how to love, but God hasn’t and continues to show us His love daily. As followers of Christ, we are reminded of this premise anytime we jump into the Word. What love looks like in the fairy tales or within popular media is the farthest thing from love. Love is not sex, love is not merely affection for another, but an abiding sense of connection that is in the midst of every healthy relationship. God’s love for His people is not conditional. We may think that love is fickle because we believe that a loving relationship could not include a need for correction. When we mix our ideas of love with the latest so-called love story, we miss out on the true nature of love and may not recognize God’s abiding love for His people and His creation. “Love is love” is a bumper sticker slogan that shows us just how far we have moved away from the biblical concept of love and why we find our world in such a state. As we turn toward God and proclaim His glory so all may hear and understand, we are to speak our words with love and not be like Jonah as he proclaimed the destruction of Ninevah as he walked through their streets, but more like our Lord Jesus as he wept entering the city of Jerusalem. Let our lives be a reflection of our Lord’s love for us, and walk in the knowledge of His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
