If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not do the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
1 John 1:6–10, LSB
Growing up these words often were in my ear. I remember saying, “If we say we are without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.” Even during the time, I had walked away from the Christian faith, they would come to mind. God forgives us when we confess, this is true. We will sin, this is also true. Yet, there is a great difference between falling into error and sinning and willfully choosing to sin. There is never a need for us to seek sin, sin, sadly, will find us. As we walk in the light of Christ, we are different though. We are meant to be different. This is where many deceive themselves by thinking because they periodically go to worship and may say a prayer here and there, they are good to go, and Jesus is with them. If a person is no different in their life than their buddies who do not believe or worship our God, then how can he be confident that Christ is with him? This is a difficult question that we should all ask ourselves as we walk out our faith life and seek to be a light which may drive some away who desire to walk in the deception of the world. We are meant to be the light and know that Christ walks with us wherever we go finding confidence in His salvation and carrying His peace to those who are caught in the web of lies the world likes to spin so all may come to know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
