“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
Matthew 5:13, ESV
What is salt? Salt adds flavor and is necessary for life. In the ancient world, salt was also of high value. For the faithful, the salt is the Gospel promise which is life giving. If we are living out our faith and shining Christ’s light into the world we are salted or seasoned well with Christ. If salt did not have a salty taste, however, it would be like eating dust or sand. The same is true for those who say they are a part of Christ’s body, but their lives reflect more of the world than our Lord. If we say Christ but carry no Gospel, what good are we to the world? We are of no value. We do ourselves no good and we do the world no good. As people come with the Law bearing down on them, we are called to proclaim the Gospel to unburden them and bring them to the fullness of forgiveness and not throw another stone on their backs. There is not one iota we can or must do for the forgiveness of our Lord. We can point out their sin, but at the same time be open about our own. We are to be the salt of the gospel not the sand of the Law and shine Christ’s peace to a world hungering for His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
