Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4, ESV
Just as God set Abraham apart to be a blessing to all nations, so too are we, as followers of Christ, called to comfort others and be a blessing. Suffering is something that all humanity knows. In times of great suffering, our calling is to bring comfort as we are comforted by our Lord and His providence. We know that our Lord does not leave us or forget about us. It isn’t about feeling His presence, necessarily, but knowing that our Lord is always close at hand. Jesus knew grief and pain as He lived among us, so we can confidently know that our Lord is near to us, just as He was near to all those who were His chosen. Our God is not distant because of our Lord’s incarnation and death. For the days we are upon this mortal coil, we can confidently know the care of our Lord and trust in His mercy as we live in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
