Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21, ESV
As the adage goes, “If you want to make God laugh tell Him your plans.” We would like to be in charge of coming up with plans. Most kids have grand visions of what they will be when they grow up, but often those things fall to the wayside when we enter life and are forced to live not in our dreams, but in the reality of what is before us and the things we envision are not in line with how things truly are. Sometimes that “dream job” is miserable, or we continue to chase after an unattainable dream. Yet, sometimes God may intervene and place our focus in a new direction, in His direction. Ultimately, God has a calling for every one of His chosen people. He desires us to seek after His calling and not after our own. Once we realize that the grass isn’t always greener, but we see the richness of what God has for us we find contentment and know His purposes. God will bless us in what He calls us to do, but that blessing is not necessarily in a worldly sense. I am sure if everyone was obedient to God, there would only be blessings in carrying His Word out. We, unfortunately, know this is not true. In our fulfillment of the calling, however, we can know joy that surpasses all as we may see God’s hands at work in the lives of others and feel the peace that He and He alone can give.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
