“Now then let the fear of the LORD be upon you; be very careful what you do, for the LORD our God will have no part in unrighteousness or partiality or the taking of a bribe.”
2 Chronicles 19:7, NASB95
Atop of many courthouses, it is common to find a statue of Lady Justice, a woman with scales wearing a blindfold. This statue is the personification of what we would call blind justice. God reiterates the call for His people to be impartial in our judgment of right and wrong. It does not matter the circumstances for any transgression, and one should not look the other way for financial gain. There is never any justification for sin. Sin is sin, and in God’s pure judgment, sin brings death. God repeated these words over and over again to His chosen people, Israel, as He sought to set them apart from all other nations. Yet, the nature of the people of Israel was to be like every other nation. As Christians, this remains unchanged. The reality for God is this: we are called to be holy, set apart from all other people. Our way of life is not to look like everyone else in the world, and our sense of justice is to be in line with that of our God. We are to seek after God’s heart and, in our failures, bring Him our confession, knowing that He will forgive us. His forgiveness is not to justify any sin, but to make us just and right before Him. It is Jesus who became sin for our sake, and He took all sin upon Himself, not so we could feel justified in our sin, but to set us free so we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
