So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
1 Corinthians 14:12, ESV
Spiritual gifts are useless for the world if they are not utilized; their sole purpose is to build up the Church. Not just the building or institution we call the Church, but fellow believers and those who are not yet fellow believers. What does this mean? God wants our gifts to be used, and He desires for us to seek them out. Don’t just seek out the extraordinary gifts but all the gifts God gives you. Some of the gifts we have for work may translate into our life in the Church, but more often than not, God gives us different gifts for faith that surpass what we do in our work life. It’s not as though the spiritual gifts cannot be utilized in our day-to-day lives because we are called to live out our faith and witness in all aspects of who we are, but spiritual gifts are given for one purpose alone, to build up the Church. Some think of tongues alone, but there are so many more, and tongues are minor, and not everyone will be given that as a spiritual gift. Not all spiritual gifts are extraordinary, but all are supernatural. God desires our lives to exude His glory and draw all of us closer to Him and His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
