For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.
1 Peter 2:19, ESV
It can be hard to stand up for what you know is right. When speaking biblical truth in the world, it can raise the ire of the worldly. This was true for the prophets in Israel, when Jesus walked with the disciples, when the Apostles spread the faith, throughout all Church history, and continues today. Yet, we are called to stand firm and remain tender-hearted. It can be easy to become callous like Jonah to the Ninevites, especially when hurt. Peter knew this suffering and wrote these words to remind us of the nature of the world and to encourage us to remain faithful in sharing the Gospel and stand firm in biblical truth. It is unjust to suffer for the truth, but God does not forget or forsake those who proclaim it. We may not feel the rewards in our lifetimes, but we will live it eternally in our Lord’s presence. It isn’t the comfort that we may feel in the moment, but the eternal peace we will know as we walk with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
