Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23–24, ESV
God knows our hearts. He knows all our thoughts and our intentions. This can be scary if we are unwilling to submit it all to Him. He can correct it all. He can change our focus. He can change our desires. This is the power of God. It’s not that we are the ones having to make the change, but, in our submission, God will be the change-maker. God renews His people, and His forgiveness and mercy are unending. Over and over in Scripture, we are reminded of God’s steadfast love. We hear about His abundant mercy, and we see Him saving the people of Israel over and over again. The people of Israel were not more faithful, nor were they the best at submitting, but God chose them. He does the same for us through Jesus Christ, His Son. As we submit ourselves to Him, He leads us down different paths and brings us into His glorious peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
