Study to show yourself approved by God, a workman who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15, MEV

Paul reminds fellow followers of Jesus of the importance of knowing God’s Word. As Lutheran Christians, we are a tradition of the faith built upon the importance of knowing and understanding the Word of God. That was the genesis of the Reformation as some were twisting the Word and failing to reveal to the people God’s promises. As we read the Bible from the Old Testament to the New, we find a narrative that clarifies God’s intentions for us as His people. His desire for us to know His promises and to understand His truth. We are called to understand the faith and, as parents, teach that faith to our children. Early on for those who could not read faith was taught through the stained-glass windows in the sanctuaries. We are to rightly divide between the Law and the Gospel to discern the grace that has been bestowed on us as Christians and the forgiveness we receive through our belief in Him. Our faith isn’t a faith centered on rules, but we are centered on the promise given to us through Jesus Christ and seeing that promise revealed from Genesis on. As we walk in this knowledge, we may shine His truth into the lives of others and free many who are trapped in guilt and shame and show them our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
