For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that He would give you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being firmly rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:14–19, LSB
God begins His work within. We are not a do-it-yourself transformation, and the Christian faith is not a lone ranger project. When God grabs us with His Holy Spirit, He begins to pull the thread of all those things that are not glorifying to Him that are written in our hearts. As the covering of our sin unravels, new areas are uncovered, and gifts are revealed. The sin sickness that covers us is pulled away, and God begins to reveal that for which we were created. So much of what we define ourselves by is a part of that sin cover. We like to think that there are many things in this world that make us who we are, but God only wants us to be defined by one thing: Him. It is this way we begin to understand the vastness of our faith and just how far God can take us away from the things we once thought to be so important. This transformation begins as He reveals and sets our roots in His love, and we are shown step by step and little by little the great work He is doing in us, through us, and within all whom He claims as His own. It is here, we begin to know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
