For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 2:2–5, MEV
We cannot solely rely on the opinions and ideas of anyone outside of Jesus Christ. For Paul, this reality came upon Him all at once when Jesus met him on the road to Damascus. Most of us won’t have a Damascus Road experience, but Jesus Christ has encountered all believers in some fashion. It is this encounter that is transformative and comes to us through Spirit-filled preaching and teaching. A sermon opens something and shines Christ's light in you. An encounter with a great biblical teacher who opens the Word of God for you revealing to you the glory of our Lord. As Christ is revealed through the proclamation of His Word, lives are turned, and people are transformed. It may not be a comforting message or teaching. It may challenge everything that is believed to be true. The preacher may not sound flashy or even be a great public speaker, but Christ is revealed unfiltered and unadulterated. Where Christ is preached and taught purely, the Church is revealed. It isn’t about making things flashy or modern, but the revelation of Christ and giving all who hear His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
