Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28, LSB

Like any good shepherd, He calls out to His sheep, and they recognize His voice and come to Him. For those who have been called and chosen by our Lord, He calls out to us to come to Him. As sheep do, we wander off and often get into precarious situations, but Jesus is continually calling to His own and desires for us to come and find rest in Him. Jesus desires for us to lay down our burdens and hand them over to Him. Letting go is a difficult task for so many. A common mentality is to handle all things on our own. We, often, take pride in this as we like to see ourselves as independent. Yet, in Christ, we are called to understand our full dependence on Him and our interdependence with our fellow brothers and sisters. Some, sadly, are more like goats butting heads with others and demanding that all be in agreement with them, but, in Christ, we seek to be only in agreement with our Lord. Our hearts are not meant to be drawn in every direction, pulled to and fro by the whims of the world, but to be at peace in the knowledge of our Lord’s guidance and protection. Lay down your burdens and take upon yourselves the yoke of our Lord and know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
