But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Psalm 131:2, ESV
As a father, I remember with each of my children those moments of the greatest contentment when they would lie in my arms across my chest and nap with them. I know those moments were precious for my wife, also. Those moments of contentment cannot be recaptured as we grow older, but the spirit, the sense of it, is what our Lord desires for us to know in Him. Our Lord desires for us to rest contentedly in His embrace without a concern for anything around us. It is easy to get wrapped up in the things of the day, but our Lord desires for us to rest easy in His arms. Knowing His love for us and not feeling as if we are meant to run to the next thing continually. As His Church, we are called to wait upon His guidance and trust in His providence. Our lives are not to reflect the world but Him, and this can only come in times of resting in His embrace and trusting Him as our Father. The peace we know as an infant and young child comes in the assurance that is given to us by our parents that we are not alone and they will protect us and provide for us, this is the assurance that our Lord gives us all and desires for us to know as He gives us His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
