Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst—ever; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 4:13–14, LSB

Jesus is a deep well that fulfills our spiritual thirst for eternity. For those of us raised with a self-reliant mentality, it can be hard to turn to Christ. Most of us know the phrases, “If you want something done right, do it yourself,” or “The only one you can count on is yourself.” There are others that I am sure that most can add and rattle off with little thought. What our Lord offers is none of this. I have known periods in my life when I have been relying more on my own power and less on the Lord. It is draining and I have felt the spiritual dryness that this mentality causes. Our Lord does not want us to think we have to do it ourselves. He wants us to know Him and to be fully reliant on His providence. We are meant to realize that without our Lord Jesus, we have nothing. We cannot change the world. It’s easy to see the many false ideals that this mentality leads to. There are many angry and frustrated because of the things they see in the world. The fear that is seen in things that they like to believe can be controlled by humanity, but how often do our attempts to fix an issue that we see create more issues? For most issues, our Lord has the solutions, and He takes care of the deep spiritual thirst that is engrained in all of us. As more turn to Him and drink deeply from His well, peace is found and our Lord desires for us to know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
