I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Galatians 2:20, LSB
The more we give ourselves over to Christ, the greater the bond becomes and the less hold the things of this world have upon us. We have all been called “Diakonos” in Greek which may be translated as a servant or minister. Many of us may be more familiar with this term in English as Deacon or Deaconess. Just prior Paul asks whether we are to be servants or ministers of sin, and the answer is, “Most certainly not!” In Christ, we have been set apart and we are in no way meant to do things that would lead another to believe things contrary to our Lord. Our lives are meant to be lived contrary to the ways of the world and we are called to be truly different. That is what is meant when we are called holy. We are set apart by God and the moment we tell others we are followers of Christ our lives are no longer our own to live because everything we do is witness to others the faith we hold. In a world that believes that truth is subjective, this is a vital reality we are called to understand and to show in our lives. This is the issue we face with our witness and was similar to the issue faced by the early Church. In our lives, we are called to live differently so that others may know the Truth that will set them free and know our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
