Psalm 42:1–2

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Psalm 42:1–2, NKJV

Do you long for God? Is your heart empty when you don’t spend time in prayer or miss a worship service? The words of the psalmist speak to the deep abiding desire for God that develops as we seek after God in all aspects of our lives. It’s not something that grows out of guilt or shame, but out of the addictive power of God’s love for us as a people. Unlike the addictions to worldly things, the addiction to our Lord’s love is filling and fulfilling. The reality we often face is that our addictions to other things drive us away from God. This may be through shame or because we want to fill up the “me” tank which always hovers on empty because we do so many other things that drain us of life. When we turn our lives over to Christ, we find things are different as we realize the only thing that truly can fill us is Him. He is that living stream that flows abundantly. He is the water that quenches our thirst. He is the food that fills the emptiness of our souls. When we hear His Word preached, we don’t hear three steps to a better life, but the way, the truth, and the life. It is through His love that we may know love and live in His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
