This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. The one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

1 John 5:11–12, EHV

Belief. One wishes it were a simple act that we could achieve through vigilant thought, but the reality of our salvation is not centered in us, but wholly in the Son of God, Christ Jesus. It is the prayer and the promise we cling to as we look to the waters of our Baptism. How do we affirm these promises? Through the Word, as we find Christ revealed to us throughout the Old and New Testaments. It can be easy to create the Son in our own image, but we seek after the Son who is incarnate of the Father and came to bring salvation to a fallen creation. We don’t worship a Christ who looks and acts like us, but a Christ who cried out for us in His suffering. Jesus loves us despite our fallenness, not because of it. His brilliance is in His perfect nature that shines against our imperfect nature. His Word is calling us away from being as we are and is ever leading us to follow Him and be with Him so we may have Him as Lord and know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
