“Now why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”
Luke 6:46, LSB
I think Paul says it best in Romans when he says, “I do the things that I do not want to do, but that which I want to do I do not do.” (Romans 7:15-25). We are so often led by our sinful nature as opposed to our godly nature. Most of us can relate to the feelings after we have done something that we knew we shouldn’t have done and ask ourselves, “Why?” The problem of sin is that, unless we pause and think, we do things that are completely contrary to how we wish to live, but we are reactive by nature and, often, our first instinct is not to do that which is faithful to our Lord. This is why the Cross was necessary. Though we are forgiven, it does not excuse our sin, and our Lord is continually reminding us to seek out His will and set aside our own. It is humbling, and in our humility, we can reflect Christ all the more as we remember to submit our sinful nature to Christ and reflect to all His glorious peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
