Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

We all know the stereotype of the person in authority, groaning as he sees someone who makes his life more difficult coming his way. It makes good comedy when you are not the one in authority. This stereotype has existed throughout history, and God does not want any of us to be that person. Yet, in every aspect of life, we can identify exactly those behaviors. Sometimes it is just circumstance, but many times it is because of poor choices or poor character. In society, we give these people names that everyone can identify and take as a warning to avoid interacting with them if possible. We also know the excuses people give for their behavior: “That’s just so-and-so, don’t take it to heart, he is always like that.” As followers of Christ, our calling is to be bearers of our Lord’s light into the lives of others and bring them joy when they see us, so through our lives we may lead others into Christ’s light.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
