John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 3:16, LSB

As Jesus was in the garden with Nicodemus, He was teaching who He was and what He had been sent to do. Before these words, Jesus points to Genesis 3:15, ”And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” Jesus utilizes His two natures in His description during this interchange, first as the Son of Man and, in this portion, as the Son of God. Christ is both man and God, and one cannot deny this truth. The power of the Gospel and the promise of our salvation is centered in this reality, that the two natures of Christ were joined into Him at once – Jesus the Christ was both fully human and fully divine – the mortal and the immortal coexisted in Him. It is this we are to believe and cling to as the miracle of the incarnation because this is the only way our Lord could save us. It is this promise that we cling to and we proclaim so all may come to know Christ’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
