So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:10–11, ESV
Have you ever noticed that when you hear a person cursing, they never utilize the names of any other god or religious leader than the name of our Lord and Savior? If someone did, it would be strange to the ear and might even provoke some rebuke from others. Yet, one need not look too hard to find someone utilizing the name of our Lord in such a fashion. The power of the name of our Lord is evident in the level of derision it can bring if invoked in a positive way in the world. Recently, in a news broadcast in England, when the name of Jesus was glorified in an interview, the interviewer could be heard hissing. The invocation of our Lord's name can make people defensive and lead them to accuse the one invoking it of inciting division. The power of Christ is evident as we hear how He stated who He was to the soldiers in the Garden. It is this name we are to cry out and glorify so others may come to Him and hear His mercy proclaimed so they may enter into His glory, and we all will know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
