Matthew 15:25

But she came and was bowing down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

Matthew 15:25, LSB

Think of the audacity of this Canaanite woman coming after a group of Israelite men travelling and crying after Jesus about her daughter. She wasn’t of the chosen. She was one of the people God had long told them to avoid.  Yet here she asks after being told to go away for help. Sadly, some miss the point as they focus on the way she is spoken of and treated because Jesus is never to have a hard word or cause anyone any difficulty in their minds. Isn’t Jesus supposed to always be friendly and nice and give people warm and fuzzy feels? How dare Jesus speak to the woman as He did? Jesus must’ve made a mistake. No mistake here. No sin of Jesus done against this woman. Jesus’ words reveal the faithful heart of this woman who, though not of the Hebrew people, trusted in what our Lord could do with a word. This is the trust we are called to have in our Lord as we approach Him and seek His mercy and healing voice. Jesus is not our Messiah to command but our Lord to bow down to and humble our hearts as we ask for His mercy and enter His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
