He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Colossians 1:17–18, MEV
Jesus is first and foremost in all things of the Church. Nothing is before Him, and everything follows Him. Paul reminds us of this and calls us to be ever mindful of it. It is easy to become caught up in so many other things. We have our ideas of what is important, but if Jesus isn’t front and center, we are called to take a pause and ponder for a moment. This can be difficult because things can easily become intertwined, and even when our passion is biblically grounded, the message and hope of Jesus Christ can become buried and lost in the pile of worldly concerns. As we proclaim our Lord and gather as His people, our center begins with Him, and the focus is on what He has done for us to bring us to redemption. This is the calling of us, His people. We are His Church and called together to bring more into His glory so more may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
