For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
Romans 7:18, ESV
There is a spiritual battle raging around us and in us. It is a tug-of-war between our will and the will of the Father. We may like to think that we can be good, do good, and live rightly, but without the power of the Holy Spirit, we will fall and fail. Sin does not have rule over our lives, but we are regularly being tempted. God will never allow us to be overwhelmed by sin, but He always will offer us a way out, yet this way we will not find it without His help. If left to our own ways, sin will win out every time. This was true for Paul and all of the early disciples and the Apostles. Sin does not have the win locked in, but we can be deceived if our focus is not redirected. If we believe we are good and can do it on our own, the battle against sin is already lost, but if we realize the quicksand that sin truly is, we will cry out, and the help we need we will find is already there, reaching out. Let our eyes be focused on our Lord, and let not our pride interfere with seeking help from the only One who can bring us salvation and bring us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
