“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:38, LSB
We who believe in Christ believe because of what has been given to us and not what we have come to on our own. Jesus promised us this gift and revealed this to His disciples. His clearest words came as He promised the coming of the Holy Spirit. Until the Holy Spirit enters us, faith is not possible. It is through Him; we may come to know the Father and the Son. As we enter the waters of Baptism, we are promised the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of faith has been proffered. Sadly, though we cannot come to faith on our own without the Holy Spirit, belief and faith may be rejected through the rejection of the Holy Spirit. One might wonder, “How can this be so?” It is unimaginable to me, and I don’t believe that once someone has fully received the gift will walk away, but the mystery of why may not be ours to fully comprehend. The gift, however, once fully received flows in abundance from within the believer as our Lord makes His residence within each of us, as believers. Our Lord makes His tabernacle in our hearts and from here comes the true source of life. It is not a source which we create, but it is created by our Lord and Him alone. It is here we find our faith, and, in this, we find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
