Deuteronomy 6:5

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deuteronomy 6:5, ESV

Our hearts are not meant to be divided, particularly when it comes to the love of God. Our God wants to be the central object of our affection, and everything else flows from this love. If our hearts are focused on our Lord, our love for all others is transformed. Our focus is clearer. Our callings are fuller. However, it is easy to be distracted. Things interrupt us. Our attention becomes divided. Temptations are encountered, and some draw us away from the paths which our Lord has prepared for us. We see many strong Christian leaders fall away in this distraction, succumbing to moral failure and moving away from ministry. We are reminded to shield ourselves by focusing more deeply on Christ Jesus and seeking to serve Him more deeply, as we pray for His strength to keep us out of harm and to protect us from temptation. He calls us to know His love and be a light to His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
