The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. I hate haughtiness, arrogance, an evil way, and a perverse mouth.
Proverbs 8:13, EHV
In Luther’s Small Catechism, the explanation of each commandment begins with the words “fear and love” and “God,” reminding us that God is not only to be loved but also to be feared. We should not like the anger or ire of one we love because it denotes that we have done something wrong that has hurt them. We don’t worship an angry God, but He is always just and is steadfast in His love for us as well as faithful to His promises. We can confidently know that God’s Law is unchanging and His justice is not swayed by the spirit of the age. Yet we see the twisting of the Word and the pride and arrogance that lead many to wander down pathways contrary to God. People’s words say things that confuse and cause distortions in thinking, causing those who are searching for something more to be caught up in the snares of the deceiver and lose hope as despair enters in. Yet, our Lord calls us to seek Him and trust in His words and promises while proclaiming to others His truth to shine a light ever onto His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
